When it comes to studying God’s Word, having the right Bible can make all the difference. Whether you’re looking for a trusted companion for in-depth study, a beautifully bound edition for personal devotion, or a user-friendly version for your family, there are a million styles and brands to choose from.

In this post, I’ll share my favorite Bibles, tell you why I like them, and what makes each special.

KJV Large Print Wide Margin Bible

The main Bible I use regularly is the KJV Large Print Wide Margin Bible by Hendrickson Publishers. It took me about 6 months of researching to find this one, and I was not disappointed. I ordered it in 2021 and love it! When I study my Bible, I like to write little notes and things in the margins (kudos to those who have artistic ability). For me, there is nothing pretty about it. It’s purely to help me remember things.

What I like about this Bible:

  • Ample space in the margin to write notes
  • Thick pages that are tough and withstand lots of turning
  • End-of-verse references to other scriptures
  • Large print
  • Nice size and thickness for a large print Bible (not too clunky, easy to carry)
Notice the wide margins!

In the back, you will find extra study helps:

  • Key Bible Promises
  • Harmony of the Gospels
  • Miracles of the OT
  • Parables of the OT
  • Miracles of the NT
  • Parables of the NT
  • OT prophecies of the Passion
  • 76-page concordance

Things I had to get used to:

  • No introduction pages with information at the beginning of each book.
  • When one book ends, the next one begins immediately, like on the same page. This took a little adjusting. I bought some Mr. Pen Bible tabs to help me navigate at first. I like the neutral colors.
  • I was accustomed to the center-reference style, so it took me a minute to get used to the end-of-verse style. I actually find them much more convenient at the end of each verse.
  • This Bible has a flexisoft cover, which is not leather, but it has the soft feel of leather. After 3 years I do have one tiny little crack on the edge of my cover, but it is contained and is not a problem for me.

KJV Chronological Life Application Study Bible

The KJV Chronological Life Application Study Bible by Tyndale Publishers is another Bible that I use when I study. I don’t carry this one with me, it is purely a study Bible for me. It is important to study the Bible in context, realizing that each event is significant and all the books point to Christ. If you are a history nut like me, you will love researching how Bible history and world history collide.

This was my first time to use a chronological Bible. It is very different than a normal Bible and does take some getting used to.

If you are looking for a good study Bible that is NOT in chronological order, check out the (large print) Tyndale Life Application Bible.

What I like about this Bible:

  • Vivid images and maps
  • Organizational charts
  • Thick pages for lots of turning
  • Durable hardcover front and back

Helpful Features

  • Running timeline throughout to help orient the reader to where you are in Bible history (located at the top of each page)
  • Character study sections: I personally love to do character studies in my regular Bible study and these are very helpful.
  • Larger informational areas between time periods. These sections include what books of the Bible were written during this time, megathemes, people who lived, important places, and more detailed timeline information.
  • Verse-by-verse commentary on bottom of page.
  • End of Bible extras: A Christian Worker’s Resource with information about how to be a Christian and live for the Lord; the book-by-book section gives you a summary, outline/blueprint, and megathemes of each book (in chronological order, of course); master index with page numbers for every entry in this Bible.

Things I had to get used to:

  • Before you dive right into this Bible, take a moment to read the pages in the beginning. These pages tell about how this chronological Bible is set up. It tells about each feature and how to navigate it.
  • Mark the Canonical Table of Contents in the beginning. If you are looking for a specific book and verse to study, you can find it here and turn to the page. I have some of these repositionable tabs and they are great for this sort of thing!
  • I don’t usually buy hardcover Bibles, but this one is very durable and necessary for this type of Bible.

Study Resources I Use

I have to say my favorite feature in a Bible is having space to write little notes in the margins. DIVERSEBEE highlighters and pens are my favorites to use in my Bible study. I love the muted, neutral colors! They glide so smoothly over the delicate pages.

I also use Washi tape. Sometimes I put it down the edge of a page so it’s easier to find, or stick it inside a page to write on. The great thing about Washi tape is it is removable. This is my favorite floral Washi tape because of all the different color shades. I also recommend and use this hardcover book of sticky notes. It makes it very convenient to stick down in your Bible case or bag and take with you.

Whatever feature you may be interested in, I encourage you to get in the Word. Plant it in your heart, and study to show yourself approved unto God.

Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth. II Timothy 2:15
